Graduation & Baccalaureate Speakers

daniel mccartney

Daniel J. McCartney

Valedictorian

Daniel J. McCartney has been named Valedictorian of the Cheverus Class of 2024. He will deliver an address at graduation on Monday, June 3 at Merrill Auditorium.

While at Cheverus, McCartney was the co-founder and four-year member of the school newspaper The Cheverian and served as co-editor-in-chief. He was a four-year member of the Key Club and a three-year member of Model UN, serving as vice president his senior year. He was a member of the Math Team and the New England Math League for his last three years. McCartney received the District Band bronze rating his freshman year, was selected for District Band honors his sophomore year, District Choir honors his junior and senior years, and All-State Choir his senior year.

McCartney was a four-year member of the cross-country team and served as captain his junior and senior years. He was recognized with an all-conference honorable mention his junior and senior years. McCartney skied for the alpine ski team all four years, and in the same season, ran indoor track his junior and senior years. He ran outdoor track his last three years. He had four four track state championship podiums in the 4×800 relay.

McCartney is a member of the National Honor Society and he received the Underclassman of the Year award his junior year.

Outside of school, McCartney is an active volunteer at his parish, St. Hyacinth’s, and has sung with his church choir during high school.

McCartney is the son of Gaylene and John McCartney ’84  of Westbrook. He plans to attend College of the Holy Cross in the fall and major in biology. 

lauren kutz

Lauren Grace Kutz

Salutatorian

Lauren Grace Kutz has been named Salutatorian of the Cheverus Class of 2024. She will deliver an address at the Senior Awards Ceremony, immediately following the Baccalaureate Mass on Sunday, June 2 at Cheverus High School.

While at Cheverus, Kutz was a three-year member of the Key Club, serving as treasurer her junior year and vice president her senior year. She was a three-year member of the Environmental Action Club, serving as treasurer her junior year and president her senior year. Kutz was a member of the Math team for three years and attended the Swan’s Island Immersion her junior year.

She was a four-year member of the field hockey team, playing varsity her senior when the team won the Class A state championship. In addition, she was a four-year member of the tennis team, playing varsity her last three years.  

Kutz is a member of the National Honor Society and is an AP Scholar. She received the Cheverus Award and the Harvard Book Award her junior year.

Outside of school, Kutz is an active volunteer at St. Brigid School, where she worked with students in the Girls Who Code Club her senior year, and co-founded the STEM club for third and fourth graders her junior year. In addition, she has tap danced at Maine State Ballet since first grade.

Kutz is the daughter of Dr. Katherine Marciniszyn and Dr. Richard Kutz of Portland. She plans to attend Dartmouth College in the fall and study science.

Madigan G. Fitzpatrick

Outstanding Senior and All-Around Student

Madigan G. Fitzpatrick has been named the Outstanding Senior and All-Around Student from the Cheverus Class of 2024. This award is given to the graduating senior who best exemplifies the spirit and ideals of a Cheverus student and is selected by the students, faculty, and staff. She will deliver an address at graduation on Monday, June 3 at Merrill Auditorium.

While at Cheverus, Fitzpatrick was a four-year member of the President’s Advisory Council, the Key Club, and Best Buddies Club. She was a three-year member of the Environmental Action Club and attended the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington, DC her senior year.

Fitzpatrick is a standout athlete who was a four-year varsity starter on the girls basketball team and captained her junior and senior years. The team won the Class AA state championhip her sophomore and senior years. She was awarded the Gatorade Player of the Year in both her junior and senior years. She received the Lisa-Blais Manning Award and was named Miss Maine Basketball her senior year, a first for a female Cheverus basketball player.

Outside of school, Fitzpatrick has co-coached an 8th grade middle school travel team and organized and ran skills and drills sessions for middle schoolers. Additionally, she is a regular volunteer at her local library.

Fitzpatrick is the daughter of Christopher and Marsha Fitzpatrick of Cumberland. She plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono where she will play basketball.

Lily E. Johnson

Baccalaureate Speaker

Lily E. Johnson has been named Baccalaureate Speaker. She will deliver an address at the Senior Awards Ceremony, immediately following the Baccalaureate Mass on Sunday, June 2 at Cheverus High School.

While at Cheverus, Johnson was a four-year member of the Best Buddies Club and
a three-year member of the Key Club.

Johnson received the Cheverus Award her freshman year, is a member of the National Honor Society, and will graduate among the top ten in her class.

Johnson is a standout student-athlete. She was a four-year starter on the varsity field hockey team and served as captain her junior and senior years. The team won the Class A state championship her sophomore and senior years. She received numerous accolades throughout her high school career, including Rookie of the Year, Champion Award, the Stag Award, and MVP Award; and was named to the all-state and the national field hockey coaches regional team three years in a row. Johnson was named Miss Maine Field Hockey, a first for Cheverus, her senior year. She was also a four-year starter on the varsity ice hockey team and was captain her senior year. The team won back-to-back state championships her junior and senior years. Johnson received the Stag Award, the Hobey Baker Award, and was a Becky Schaffer Award semi-finalist. She was named to the all-conference team her first three years, and the all-state team her senior year.

Outside of school, she is an active volunteer coach for Coastal Field Hockey Club.

Johnson is the daughter of Anna Donatelli and Tom Johnson of Portland. She plans to attend Boston University where she will play field hockey.

Peter F. Wycoff

Class President

Peter F. Wycoff is the president of the Cheverus Class of 2024. He will deliver an address at graduation on Monday, June 3 at Merrill Auditorium.

While at Cheverus, Wycoff was a three-year member of the World Languages Club, serving as president his junior year and treasurer his sophomore year; a four-year member of the Civil Rights Team, serving as treasurer his junior year; a four-year member of the Key Club; and was an Admissions Ambassador all four years. He attended the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington, DC his sophomore and junior years and participated in the Milan Exchange Program his junior year.

Wycoff is a member of the National Honor Society, earned the Maine Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish, is an AP Scholar, and will graduate among the top ten in his class.

He was a four-year member of the tennis team, playing varsity his junior and senior years, and ran cross country his first three years at Cheverus.

Outside of school, he is an altar server and lector at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception.

Wycoff is the son of Eric and Jeannette Wycoff of Portland. In the fall, he plans to attend Boston College and major in political science.
